The idea of tying a surfboard to yourself dates back almost a century now, though it wasn’t until the mid-1970s that the concept became an accepted piece of equipment, with the ankle as the connection point (hence “legrope”). The "Pro Leash" was commercially made in America in the 1970s and represents a particularly dangerous version. While earlier types were even more basic (a dog collar and curtain cord), the Pro Leash features a neoprene-padded nylon ankle strap with stainless steel fastening loops, attached to a length of woven nylon cord. A short length of rubber surgical tubing was added to cushion the pull on your leg when the rope reached maximum length, but the elasticity shot the board back at you, so this particular design didn’t gain broad acceptance.
