The innovative Nintendo Game Boy transformed the electronic games market by popularizing handheld gaming. Nintendo scored a huge hit with the 1985 release of Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), a home video-game console that delivered a fun, high-quality gaming experience and made the Nintendo brand dominant during the late 1980s and beyond. Gaming hardware was (and still is) the cornerstone of the interactive entertainment industry, but it is the games, stored on external media, that lead to sales and market share. Popular NES game titles, such as Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda, captivated video-game players in Asian and North American markets alike. The system sold more than sixty million units during a decade-long production run. Following the incredible success of the NES, Nintendo released the cartridge-based handheld Game Boy in 1989. Nintendo expanded on its original device with the Game Boy Color in 1998. No longer black and white, the Game Boy screen enabled players to enjoy their handheld games with a greater degree of clarity. Two new additions to The Legend of Zelda franchise were among the new games for the Game Boy Color. The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons, both released in 2001, helped Nintendo expand upon one of their most illustrious and enduring legends. Oracle of Seasons begins with the General of Darkness, Onox, kidnapping a young girl named Din. This triggers a chain of events where the seasons become erratic, since the girl happens to be the Oracle of Seasons. The protagonist, a boy named Link, embarks on a quest to save Din from the antagonistic Onox. The game takes place in the land of Holodrum and is one of the few Zelda entries that does not occur in the mythical kingdom of Hyrule. Oracle of Seasons enables Link to change the seasons with the mysterious Rod of Seasons. The Oracle games, as they are known, are significant for being connected. Playable in either order, one can begin a new journey on the second game upon completion of the first in order to attain a secret ending. The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons sold nearly four million copies, making it a highly successful addition to the series.
