Prof. Winarno was born in the village where tempeh was first documented in the 1600s: Klaten, Central Java, Indonesia. Surviving poverty also on tempeh during childhood, Prof. Winarno thrived as a food scientist who has written important texts on tempeh and soybeans. Prof. Winarno served as the president of WHO-FAO CODEX Alimentarius Commission in the 1990s and eventually was inaugurated as the Indonesian Father of Food Science & Technology for his deed in cultivating new food scientists. Prof. Winarno co-founded the Indonesian Tempe Movement with his daugther Wida and grandson Driando in 2014.
