Professor Cyril Joad, Head of Philosophy at Birkbeck College

This photograph shows a portrait of Cyril Joad by J. M. Clark. Cyril Edwin Mitchinson Joad (1891-1953) was an English philosopher and broadcaster. He was Head of the Department of Philosophy and Psychology at Birkbeck College from 1930-1953. He appeared on The Brains Trust, a popular BBC Radio wartime discussion programme, which brought philosophy to the general public and made Joad a celebrity.
