Odilon Redon met the Nabis group in 1899 through Maurice Denis and created several profile portraits of artists. Here he depicts his friend Paul Sérusier, with whom he shared an admiration for Gauguin. This engraving, printed in an edition of twelve at the Blanchard printing house in Paris, belongs to this intimate series.
