Project for the Paderno lock, detail

Leonardo was the first to provide a proposal for constructing a canal making it possible to navigate from Lake Como to the Adda, overcoming with a single high lock the torrential sections of the river in narrow gorge of Paderno, which he had represented previously in the landscape of The Virgin of the Rocks.
