Museum of Art & Photography
Bangalore, India

This calendar promoting Vinolia soap features the Hindu deity Lakshmi. A series of Vinolia calendars in the late 1920s and early 1930s used the images of goddesses Lakshmi and Saraswati, based on the well-known Raja Ravi Varma paintings. Imagery from the Ravi Varma Press, as immediately recognisable and popular, was used extensively for advertising, calendars and textile labels in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
