A sector, or proportional compass, of gilt brass. The type is often referred to as a Galilean sector, albeit the invention has more than one originator. A sector was primarily used for calculating distances and was useful for artillery officers, surveyors and navigators. The quadrant fixed to the two legs of the sector is detachable.
