Prosper Mérimée, French archaeologist, historian, and novelist, was born in Paris in 1803. His masterpiece, "Colomba," deals with the Corsican vendettas. He was elected to the Académie in 1844 and to the Académie des Inscriptions et Belle-Lettres, of which he was a prominent member. He was a senator and a friend and constant companion of the emperor and his mistress. Late in his life, he published works chiefly on Spanish, Roman and Russian history. He died in 1870.
