A page from a protocol by Ser Piero da Vinci, Leonardo’s father, an example of his considerable professional writing activity. It is a deed dated 7 February 1462, drawn up in his home in Borgo de’ Greci, in the presence of his brother Francesco (Leonardo’s uncle) and his father-in-law Giovanni di Zanobi Amadori (the father of Albiera, Piero’s first wife and Leonardo’s stepmother). This was probably the first house to welcome young Leonardo in Florence. His uncle Francesco (like Giovanni) was a “calzaiuolo” (shoe merchant) and the following year he went on to marry Albiera’s sister, Alessandra.
