PS accelerating cavity

1971

CERN

CERN
Geneva, Switzerland

A Siemens construction, the first of the new accelerating cavities for the PS to be installed. In straight section 66 of the ring during the present shutdown of the machine. The cavity provided a peak r.f. voltage of 20 kV which was twice of the previous model. After a test period (during which the old cavities are left untouched so that they can be brought back into action if needed), the fourteen existing cavities were gradually replaced by ten new ones. This progressive replacement prevented problems which might be encountered in replacing the cavities en bloc.
