Pseudo-Panathenaic Amphora

Wheel-made amphora has a broad mouth
with flattened externally thickened rim,
cylindrical neck, ovoid body and low
pedestal foot. Vertical loop handles on
either side join the neck to the shoulder.
The neck is decorated with palmette
motifs in the black-figure technique and
on either side of the body is a scene in
the black-figure technique below a band
of short lines. One of the scenes depicts
Athena dressed in a peplos standing
between two Doric columns. In her left
hand she holds a spear at shoulder level
that she is about to fling, and in her
right hand she holds a shield. The other
scene depicts two naked long-distance
runners known as dolichos. The base of
the amphora is surrounded by a sunburst
motif in the black-figure technique.
Pseudo-panathenaic amphoras were
uninscribed, comparatively smaller
versions of panathenaic amphoras, which
were presented as prizes to competition
winners at the Panathenaia festival (see
Mitchell 2009, p. 133).
