Remarkable Parisian tree: Chinese Pterocaryer (Pterocarya stenoptera), Jardin des serres d'Auteuil, Circumference: 560 cm, Height: 27 m, Planted in 1905.
Pterocarya stenoptera, also known as Chinese Pterocarya or Chinese Walnut, is a spreading tree belonging to the Juglandaceae family. Its scientific name means "narrow-winged nut" in reference to its winged fruits.
The leaves of the Pterocarya stenoptera are composed of several oblong, bright green leaflets, reaching 30 to 40 cm in length. The midrib of each leaflet is winged, adding an extra decorative dimension to the tree.
In Paris, century-old specimens of the Pterocarya stenoptera can be admired in several places, including the ecological garden of the Jardin des Plantes, the Jardin des Serres d'Auteuil and the Parc Montsouris.
