Ðuro Janeković (Zagreb, 1912 – Osijek, 1989), university teacher, was one of the first professional photo-reporters in Croatia. From 1933 to 1935 he had a full-time job as photo-reporter at Jugoslavenska štampa in Zagreb, which published Novosti, Kulisa, Koprive... he worked on assignments with Tošo Dabac. A member of Fotoklub Zagreb, he exhibited before World War II at exhibitions of art photography in Vienna, Munich, Buenos Aires, London, Oslo, Stockholm, Amsterdam, Debrecin, Prague, Warsaw, Sofia and a number of exhibitions of art photography in Zagreb. He won a number of prizes for his work, most notably the Camera Craft Prize of 1935. He is one of the progenitors of engaged social art, a pioneer in photographic reportage, and of photographic adverts in Croatia. In his oeuvre, a leading place is occupied by works created under the aegis of New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit), a rare case in Croatian photography. He was among the first to handle colour photography as well.
