Candido Portinari1944

Projeto Portinari

Projeto Portinari
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Composition in black and white. Fast contour lines. It depicts a kind of devil sitting seat having at its front four human figures in desperate attitude. From the left to the right is seen: naked woman kneeling in profile to the right; a figure lying in the prone position, in profile to the left; a little further back, front man kneeling with his arms up and over a figure lying prone with the head to the bottom. To the right of the composition, devil sitting on throne profile to the left; he has horns, is squalid and is with the on the right arm stretched forward. The scene suggests that the four figures described above would be begging forgiveness of the devil. At the bottom of the composition, sinuous lines and some loose strokes.
