Purple saké bottle with wisteria design in maki-e

UnknownEdo period (first half of 19th century)

At first glance this bottle looks like it is made from lacquer. There are relatively few examples of Edo period glass works that have pictures painted on them. This lack of painted design probably reflects the Japanese aesthetic view that the “transparency” of glass should be emphasized. This bottle is decorated with three sections of wisteria blossoms and branches.
