Purpurka' kerchief Purpurka' kerchief

Intense red linen kerchief called 'purpurka' with printed floral pattern. The pattern is located all around the kerchief. Around the edges of the kerchief, a 9 cm wide border runs, of large and small flowers among which roses dominate. Inside the border, the kerchief is printed with bunches of little roses. The kerchief was worn on the head by married women, as part of the festive Upper Silesian costume. It was characteristically fastened with a safety pin, or without it. Various manners of tying the kerchief were customary, depending on the town. Women could be identified with the area from which they came from by the manner of kerchief tying.
