Whether they're made up of letters, to spell words, or numbers, slider puzzles are familiar to most Americans now. Like many other mass-produced puzzles today, they were first constructed of wood and made by hand. A metal example, probably dating from the mid-1930s, has black and white enamel squares marked with numbers. People treasured such puzzles then and this example came with its own red carrying pouch.
