Up until the 1920s, all golf shafts were made from wood. With woods such as hickory becoming scarce, manufacturers experimented with steel shafts. Many golfers were suspicious of the new shafts so pyratone, a plastic-like material, was often used as a covering to give the appearance of wood. Steel shafts were legalised in the US in 1924 and Great Britain in 1930.
