Pyrite, otherwise known as Fool's Gold, is a form of iron sulfide. Prehistoric animals like this ammonite, were buried in ocean sediments where the low oxygen of these environments prevented decay. The presence of sulphate reducing bacteria and reactive iron caused the bodies of these ancient creatures to become pyratized fossils.
