Instructions of higher command regarding the treatment of forced laborers were hardly implemented in the areas on military operations; their destiny depended on the attitude of their immediate commanders. Most often, the chances of survival were proportionally reduced by the distance from the borders of Hungary. The excesses, abuses, profiteering and torture methods varied widely; cruel and sadistic commanders and guards made laborer's life miserable, or even took them.
