This Chinese ewer from the 12th-13th century Java Sea Shipwreck is covered in a translucent light-blue glaze called qingbai (CHING-bye). Shaped like a gourd, this ewer may have offered healing or protection against disease or symbolized fertility. Its handle is shaped like a dragon, a mythical beast that could bring good fortune.
