Conceived and realised during the period of Michelangelo Pistoletto’s solo show at the Galleria Sperone in Turin in 1968, this piece is an ironic and contemporary rereading of the painting. It derives from the Minus Objects, a series created from 1965 as a heterogeneous collection of objects and the negation of a unique and recognisable artistic style. For Pistoletto, the artistic object is almost no different to those of everyday life and use. The choice of “poor”, scrap materials lacking any aesthetic quality represents a “liberation from a necessity” and motivates the action itself: Pistoletto’s expressive liberty shakes off the limitations of style and the commercialisation of the work of art.
