From the Artist: My artwork has been put on hold for many years now and while I’ve had a burning desire to make my way back to it, the timing never seemed right. From March to July I was given the opportunity to transition my role into a work from home position temporarily. I finally had the physical time and mental capacity to start dissecting the ways in which I participate in this consumer driven economy and how I might revisit my work using these familiar themes. The problem of plastic pollution has always fueled my need to collect and over the years small collections began to crowd my space begging to be worked into some sort of project. I tried to implement some no-waste initiatives in my home and in doing so uncovered a lot of beautiful and useful waste. In the past I would go straight to resin as my all encompassing material but in the spirit of doing less harm to myself and my environment I made some small tests with non-toxic clear tacky glue. One thing led to another and here I am completely absorbed with these small moments of stacking recycled materials into the glue. I plan to create a large square composition made up of hundreds of these small transparent impressions. The piece will be titled “Quebra-Mola” a Brazilian Portuguese term for a speed bump; paying homage to my cultural background and celebrating getting over the hump and on the other side of creating art again.
