Azcue is one of the most important purist and Nazarenist of Basque painters. He studied in Madrid, Rome and Paris in the mid nineteenth century with a scholarship from the Provincial Government of Gipuzkoa. On commission from the provincial government, he made a partial copy of the portrait of Queen Isabel II painted three years before by his master, Federico de Madrazo. The great majority of Madrazo’s disciples worked in close association with him. As well as copying classic pictures at the Prado Museum, they also explored the master's techniques and compositional mediums, directly copying his portraits of the royal family.
