Latifah was really a pioneer. ‘Ladies First’ had an enormous impact. It was a record that influenced multiple generations of women,” said former Tommy Boy Records label president Monica Lynch. Rapper/DJ/VJ Sway Calloway said, “I thought [Latifah] was very important as a powerful Black woman, who stood with a straight spine and wore African garb, and celebrated her history and where she came from. We needed that kind of messaging as kids.”
