The Helidon Sandstone originated from the deposition of sediments carried by a network of river systems throughout the Great Australian Basin, which covers roughly half of Queensland. The Helidon Sandstone is equivalent to the Precipice Sandstone, which is early Jurassic and approximately 184-205 million years old.
The Helidon Sandstone is used as a facing stone for the building industry. More importantly, it contains aquifers, which provide water for the grazing industry, and reservoirs of oil and gas. This sample was quarried at Helidon, 20 km east of Toowoomba, QLD.
