Betty Neville was an skilled amateur artist who was based in Melbourne, and painted in the 1970s and 1980s. She frequently painted still life studies like this work, but also enjoyed painting 'plein-air' on weekly outings with a group of fellow artists. She was awarded a prize in six different years of the Golden Wattle Art Competition which was held annually in Maryborough, Victoria. This work was awarded a prize in the Oils division in 1985.
