Photograph of a section of Quinta de Vargelas. It is a wine estate that sprawls from the banks of the Douro to Alto de Vargelas, next to the village of S. Xisto. The landscape is marked by areas of "mortório" with woods, orchards and olive and almond groves. The vineyard was planted according to different systems, with emphasis on the areas of vines on terraces with schist walls (about 3.5 ha): a small area of pre-phylloxera vineyard and several plots of post-phylloxera terraces of excellent construction. There are also some large extensions of vertical planting that contribute to enrich the landscape patchwork. During the 19th century, this estate formed by different plots belonged, among others, to the family of D. Antónia Ferreira. Since 1893 it belongs to Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman.
