- About Creator: A member and artisan since 2005 of the Associação Cultural dos Mamulengueiros e Artesãos de Glória do Goitá [Cultural Association of Mamulengueiros and Artisans of Glória do Goitá], Jacilene Felix de Lira (born in Glória do Goitá, PE, 1985) is a performer and plays the character Mateus — a traditional figure in Brazilian popular culture — in the groups Mamulengo Nova Geração and Flor do Mulungu. Since 2011, she has been teaching puppet-making workshops at the Museu do Mamulengo de Glória do Goitá [Mamulengo Museum in Glória do Goitá]. Jacilene says she becomes so attached to the puppets she creates that, at times, she can’t bring herself to sell them: “Just to give you an idea, there are puppets I’ve already named after my own children”.
