As queers, many of us are used to reading social cues and signs for evidence of relative safety or harm; (self-)consciously maneuvering our bodies, words and mannerisms to defy, displace or assimilate to heterosocial expectations; struggling against the relegation of our bodies and lives as always already contaminated or inessential.
