This portrait of Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson was taken during the last years of his life, after he had settled in Samoa. Before making his home at Vailima, Stevenson had widely travelled and spent long periods of time in different countries, often having to move when certain climates or outbreaks of disease threatened his lifelong fragile immune system. However, the conditions in in the Pacific suited Stevenson well and he remained in good health until his death from a brain haemorrhage at 44.
