MACE FOR BRITISH JEWELLERS ASSOCIATION
26.1. 1955.
The British Jewellers' Association, which represents nearly 2,000 manufacturing and wholesale
jewellers, has become a patron of its own trade. The Central Council of the Association recently decided that the ancient art of silversmithing was in serious danger of extinction without public support. It was decided that the Association should commission a special piece every year, thus building up its own collection of fine silverware and, at the same time, setting an example to similar organisations who might become patrons to the trade. The first piece, a modern silver mace for use upon ceremonial occasions, has now been completed, designed by the well-known designer R.H.Hill, and made by a London firm of silversmiths.
