The musical instruments that were introduced in Europe by the Muslims are the lute (ud), the psaltery (qanun), the rabel (rabab), the flute (nai), the añafil or trumpet (nafir), the square (duff), the atabal or timbal (tabl), etc. The most popular and innovative musician of al-Andalus was Ziryab (9th century), who introduced the fifth string in the classical lute. The realization of musical instruments was included within the specialized carpenters' guild.
