Studying sculpture in Gdansk and Ceramics at the University of Westminster and the Royal College of Art, this Polish-born London-based Ceramicist conveys a sense of natural awe in her work. Memories of Poland’s post-Communist transition drive her boundary-pushing approach, which has seen her exhibit in biennales from the UK to Korea.
Rather than an abstract idea, Regel invests her trust in materials, using her hands to explore more malleable possibilities. These three vessels are monuments to the way material performance reveals the inexorable passage of time. The cumulative effect of drying and re-firing multiple layers of the same elements is enriched by the incorporation of hand-formed chunks of rock and remnants of unprocessed clay.
The resulting pieces are reminiscent of contorted branches, limbs, organs, and arteries, anchoring them to the natural world. What begins as an exploration of the unknown, becomes a story of constant metamorphosis, punctuated by conflict
and change.
