This expressive symbolic image of Slovenia wrapped in the national colours and rent by fascist and imperialist dogs was painted during the Second World War. Tone Kralj, the most patriotic of all Slovene painters, created an indelible document of the historical deception and martyrdom suffered by Slovenia as a victim of the 1915 Treaty of London: the fate of the territory and its people was sealed by the peace treaty signed in 1920 in the Italian town of Rapallo. The grotesque figures in the painting represent the creators of tragic episodes of European history. (Edvilijo Gardina)
