Ready for the Palio

For centuries, Siena’s Palio takes place twice a year, on the 2nd of July and on the16th of August, in the Campo Square. On these days crowds of people will gather within the Campo Square itself and on the bleachers situated around the limits of the Square. The Historic Parade takes place on the race track with the procession of the 17 Contradas. Thereafter 10 Contradas (with their horses) will compete in the race for the Palio. In order to make it happen, everything must be perfectly arranged starting with putting a layer of tufo on the track.
