For centuries, sailors have engaged in rituals when their ships crossed certain markers, such as the equator. Celebrating these milestones boosts morale. This certificate commemorates the U.S. Navy ship Intrepid crossing the Arctic Circle in 1957. It proclaims that Intrepid crew member Charles R. Moyer is a “true and trusted ice and brine encrusted bluenose.” The certificate is signed by Intrepid commanding officer Capt. Joseph H. Kuhl.
