Calder was born in Philadelphia, the second of three generations of sculptors. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under Thomas Eakins, and continued his studies in Paris in the early 1890s. Calder found great success upon his return to the United States, receiving multiple commissions for sculptures throughout his lifetime. He returned to the Pennsylvania Academy and taught both sculpting and anatomy. This sculpture of a nude woman reclining was completed in plaster of paris, whereas Calder’s most famous works were completed in bronze.
