American pop icon Madonna produced an amazing five Top Five singles from her third album, "True Blue" (1986). Breaking away from the previous dance-pop recordings written for her, Madonna actually penned most of the lyrics on this album. Critics considered the ballad "Live To Tell" one of her best songs. Other hits included "Open Your Heart," the Latin-inspired "La Isla Bonita," and the '50s-influenced title track, "True Blue." In "Papa Don't Preach," the most controversial song on the album, Madonna sang about an unmarried young woman who decides to "keep her baby." Her sexy persona encouraged thousands of teenage girls, dubbed "Madonna wannabes," to adopt her eccentric clothing style in the mid-1980s. A fiercely independent performer and sharp businesswoman, Madonna branched into film and stage productions as well.
