In the 1970s, the Jackson 5 emerged as one of the biggest stars of the Motown pop music machine. A huge merchandising push brought the group's funky R&B sound to the top of the charts. From a 1966 local talent show win, the brothers moved on to an amateur talent show at the Apollo Theater in 1967.The group auditioned for Motown in 1968 and earned the backing of Berry Gordy who provided the Jackson 5 with the chance to open for Diana Ross. Their first single, 1969's "I Want You Back" reached number 1 on both the R&B and the pop charts. Hit albums, licensed dolls, and a Saturday morning cartoon television series followed. By 1974 when the album "Dancing Machine" made its appearance, the craze for the Jackson 5 had passed its peak but the LP still sold thousands and the "Dancing Machine" single reached #1 on the R&B charts and #2 on the pop charts.
