The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center
New York, United States

The Daughters of Bilitis, also called the DOB or the Daughters, was the first lesbian civil and political rights organization in the United States. Named after a fictional contemporary of Sappho, the group was originally formed as a social alternative to frequently-raided lesbian bars. However, their purpose quickly shifted to one of support, education, and legal advocacy for gay women.
