Since his early years in Uruguay until the end of his career in Spain, drawing was a fundamental form of expression for Pablo Serrano in parallel with his sculptures. This drawing corresponds to the sculpture series Irons (Hierros) created from 1956 to 1962, in which metal scrap pieces were soldered and other cast-off materials added according to his concept of order in chaos. The stone clenched between jaws seems to reflect humankind's struggle against nature's destructive force. Serrano was inspired by this power during his visit to Herculaneum and Pompeii in Italy, after he returned to Spain following his period in America.
