In February 1960 CERN passed two milestones in its staffing history: it had reached a total of 1000 staff of all types, and it had received its 20 000th application for employment. The occasion was marked by an informal gathering at which the 1000th staff member, Mr. Claude Célarier of PS Division, was welcomed by the Director-General.
