Jacopo Zucchica. 1570

New York, United States

The figure of Oceanus, crowned with seaweed and spewing water, emerges from a mass of waves at the top of the fountain design. Beneath him, reclining in octagonal basin decorated with marine motifs, are river gods Arno on the right and Tiber on the left. Each river god hoists an urn from which water flows and is joined by his respective attributes: the lion for Florence (Arno) and Romulus, Remus and the Wolf for Rome (Tiber). Alternative treatments for base ornaments are shown.
