Red Ceremonial Robe of the Consort of Imperial Prince Yeong

This is an exemplary dress which the royal household women in Joseon and the Korean Empire wore at various state ceremonies. Commoners were allowed to wear such robe at their wedding ceremonies. Its name, wonsam(literally meaning red clothing) was derived from the round shape of the fabric band that trims the collar. Two bands of fabric face each other with wide openings on both sides, and the back is longer than the front. The sleeves, which drape over the hands, are adorned with multi-colored stripes. This robe of the consort of Imperial Prince Yeong is made of red silk with cloud and phoenix design and embroidered insignias of a five-clawed dragon are attached on the chest, back, and shoulders.
