Song dynasty

Wangye Museum

Wangye Museum
Shenzhen, China

The Song dynasty was a turning point for ball sports. People of the Tang dynasty preferred vigorous and powerful sports, whereas people of the Song dynasty pursued a cultural temperament and gradually shifted towards harmonious emotions and cultivation. The Confucian ideal of finding relaxation and amusement in the arts was embodied in the elegant game of chuiwan. Although the sport was not able to completely cut itself off from ceremony, it was clear that in the lives of the Song people, the sport gradually became more leisurely, and at the same time emphasized the cultivation of virtue and acceptable conduct.
