The Song dynasty was a turning point for ball sports. People of the Tang dynasty preferred vigorous and powerful sports, whereas people of the Song dynasty pursued a cultural temperament and gradually shifted towards harmonious emotions and cultivation. The Confucian ideal of finding relaxation and amusement in the arts was embodied in the elegant game of chuiwan.
