Red Panda
Ailurus fulgens

Red Pandas are not actually pandas. They are placed in their own family and resemble raccoons. In fact, the one thing this panda has in common with the Giant Panda is its specialised bamboo diet. Red Pandas tweet – not by using 140 characters – but with a ‘twittering’ sound. Other forms of communication include visual and chemical signals such as urine, faeces and gland secretions.

Distribution: Nepal, India, Bhutan, Myanmar and southern China
Conservation status: Vulnerable
Evolutionary distinctiveness: High
