This painting shows the view towards Lake Corangamite, from the rocky outcrop known as Red Rock, near Colac.
The painting was formerly attributed to Nicholas Chevalier on the basis of its supposed resemblance to other work by him, particularly 'Grassdale, near Casterton' (1863, ANZ Art Collection). He is known to have painted at least two views of stations in the Colac region in the early 1860s: John Bromfield's property Corangamorah (private collection), and William Robertson's property near Lake Colac (private collection). However, other commentators have questioned the stylistic identification with Chevalier, and internal evidence in the painting suggests that it was painted after 1873, by which time Chevalier had already permanently left Australia.
