Red Squirrel
Sciurus vulgaris
Red Squirrels are important seed dispersers in forest ecosystems. They don’t hibernate over winter; instead they rely on their stores of nuts and seeds. In parts of Europe, the species is threatened by the introduced, larger Grey Squirrel, but habitat loss is also detrimental to the species.
Distribution: widespread across Europe and northern Asia
Conservation status: Least Concern
Evolutionary distinctiveness: Low
